Kauhava, Finland, is renowned for its long and rich history of knife-making, and it is here that Ahti knives are manufactured. The family business of knife-making, now in its fourth generation, is operated by Reino Kamppila and his son. Although theirs is a smaller shop, they produce knives of excellent quality and workmanship. The knives and their accompanying leather sheathes are not only visually appealing but also satisfyingly functional.
Scandinavian knife-making traditions are reflected in the Ahti knives, with their handles made from curly birch, sanded and stained. The fittings on the knives are polished brass, and the sheathes feature plastic inserts to protect both the sheath and the user's hand, as these knives are exceptionally sharp and could easily cause injury if inserted incorrectly. The belt loops are not directly attached to the sheathes, but rather connected by a small metal ring, allowing the sheath to dangle and swivel, making it easier to move and sit with the knife on one's belt.
The Vaara ("Forested Hill") model features a good-sized blade measuring almost 4 inches, and the full-sized handle is shaped at both ends to provide a firm grip, making it suitable for use even while wearing gloves or mittens. This version of the Vaara has a carbon steel blade.
Detailed measurements of this knife are as follows:
Blade Material: 0.8% high carbon steel, hardened to 59 Rockwell Knife Length: 8.25 inches (21 cm) Blade Length: 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) Blade Width: 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) Blade Thickness: 0.12 inches (3 mm) Knife Weight: 3.2 ounces (91 grams) Handle Length: 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) Pommel: tang end with brass nut Handle Circumference: 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) Handle Material: stained curly birch Sheathed Weight: 4.9 ounces (139 grams) Sheathed Length: 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) Belt Loop Width: 2.5 inches (6.4 cm)
The Ahti knives, crafted in Kauhava, Finland, by Reino Kamppila and his son, are a testament to the region's rich history of knife-making. These knives, with their exceptional quality and workmanship, are not only visually appealing but also highly functional, reflecting the Scandinavian traditions of knife-making. The Vaara model, in particular, stands out with its well-designed blade and handle, making it a versatile and reliable tool for various tasks, even in demanding conditions.
